31 May 2026: Epilogue

As we unpack our shopping, the difference between travelling by car and by plane becomes obvious. Our selection is small but excellent – just the essentials!

Saturday, 30 May 2026: Beach and back home to Bern

We have breakfast at Costa and then head to the Portobello suburb. We find a parking space near the beach and immediately feel at home here. It’s touristy, but you find just the locals. We stroll up and down the beach promenade and even spot a service offering beach wheelchairs that you can hire by booking (in advance?). We order a drink from a food [Weiterlesen]

Friday, 29 May 2026: Discovering Edinburgh

After picking up some breakfast from the supermarket, we drive to Calton Hill. Between Scotland’s National Monument, the observatory and the Nelson Monument, we find a bench that’s more or less sheltered from the wind where we can enjoy our breakfast with a view. We can see the city in all directions, from the harbour through the old and new parts of the city to [Weiterlesen]

Thursday, 28 May 2026: Balmoral

Today we’re heading to a really lovely bakery for breakfast. And sure enough, it has the widest selection of baked goods we’ve ever seen – all made on the premises. Gabi goes for a classic croissant, I order a key lime donut, and Chrige’s sweet treat was gone so quickly I didn’t even have time to look at what it was. We also pick up [Weiterlesen]

Wednesday, 27 May 2026: Monsters and more castles

After picking up a nice breakfast from the supermarket, we drive to Nessie. Or rather, to the northern end of Loch Ness. You can’t get to the shore anywhere else, and it’s an absolutely perfect spot. We enjoy our meal whilst, just a few metres away, a Nessie researcher is offering pieces of his trinkets. And sure enough, we soon spot a wild animal in [Weiterlesen]

Tuesday, 26 May 2026: A surprise ferry trip to Skye

Our first stop today is the M&S Food Hall. We stock up on breakfast and lunch here. Then we’re off to the Glennfinnan Viaduct: the Harry Potter train is due to pass through at 10.45 am. The visitor centre car park is already very full, and sure enough, crowds of people are streaming towards the viaduct. Unfortunately, however, we read on a sign: “Steam train [Weiterlesen]

Monday, 25 May 2026: Glorious Glencoe

After a lovely breakfast at Costa Coffee, we set off towards Fort William, our next stop for the night. The weather is sunny and warm, just the perfect temperature. We follow the road along Loch Lomond, which, like most large lakes, is long and narrow. It’s the perfect place to make a few stops along the way to really soak up the atmosphere and take [Weiterlesen]

Sunday, 24 May 2026: Kelpies, Stirling Castle and Loch Lomond

We pick up some breakfast at the nearby Tesco and drive over to the Kelpies. The 30 metre high sculptures depict two water spirits in the form of horses, known as Kelpies. In Scottish legends, they offer to carry travellers and others across rivers or lakes on their backs. Instead, the Kelpies drag them into the depths and eat them. Fortunately, these two don’t seem [Weiterlesen]

Saturday, 23 May 2026: Flying to Scotland

Gabi, Chrige and I arrive at Zurich Airport more than two hours before departure, and yet we suddenly find ourselves running out of time: checking in takes far more patience and waiting than necessary, and our boarding assistance doesn’t turn up at the gate on time. After that, however, things move quickly. We’re seated and take off almost on time. After a pleasant Edelweiss flight, [Weiterlesen]
