Wednesday 9 May 2018: Safely back at home

I go and get breakfast from Pret a last time, and food for the journey home, and enjoy the view of St Pancras station.

We drive off at 8.40am… only to get stuck in traffic almost immediately. As we don’t really advance anymore, we try an alternate route, but without luck. All roads that lead to the expressway along the Thames are blocked due to construction sites. We have to stay in slow traffic for even more time and are being diverted to smaller and smaller streets where we hit the pavement on one occasion and scratch one of the wheel rims badly. Sh**. That wouldn’t have been necessary.

We finally make it out of the city and drive towards Folkestone. We arrive at the Eurotunnel more than one hour late, but are in luck: There isn’t much going on so we don’t have to wait for long until our new departure time comes up.

A little later, we’re on the platform and ready to board the train. As usual, we hardly notice the train’s departure.

I use the 35 minutes to France to eat my sandwich. Then, we already leave the train and drive onto the French motorway.

As there are lots of French cops hiding along the motorway waiting for clients, we take it slower than usual. We still make good progress though. As always, there’s a traffic jam in Strasbourg. We finally leave Strasbourg behind us and drive through some rainy bits.

Around 8pm, we cross the border with Switzerland and only have 100 more kilometres to go. At exactly 9pm, we arrive back at home. Home sweet home! In total, we have made 3,144 kilometres / almost 2,000 miles.

“No, no,  we didn’t buy as much this time”, says Gabi.
