3. June 2017: Design Museum
On our last day in London, we visit the Design Museum. The new Range Rover Velar recently premiered in its entrance hall.
The museum hosts all kind of design objects and gives insights into their backgrounds: Street signs, shoes, chairs, and much more. They also have a lot of Apple devices. π
I particularly like the huge wall with the evolution of cameras, game consoles, headphones and other electronic devises. The storage media’s history starts with a phonograph drum by Thomas Edison (too far on the left to see on the photo) and also contains a Betamax video cassette and a minidisk β storage media that didn’t manage to become a standard.
The special exhibition ‘Cartier’ shows another side of the watch maker. He deemed it equally important for technical objects to look good β to have a great design. The shape of early airplaines for example, or a watch’s wristband (which, as it seems, he invented).
Another special exhibition is dedicated to design from California. This includes a lot of Apple and Google. They spot a Google Street View backpack, a (real!) Apple I computer, Larry Page’s chair and the ‘Google’ neon sign from Google’s first office. Also a prototype of Google’s self-driving car.
After the museum, we head to Whole Foods for lunch: Brisket, beans and potato salad β they ran out of macaroni & cheese unfortunately.
Afterwards, we visit a special roof garden in the area: They even have flamingos in Kensington Roof Gardens! They walk around freely and sometimes run between the visitors to get from one pond to another. The red brick walls, gateways and gardens really make us forget we’re on top of a building rather than somewhere in Tuscany. But then the church tower’s roof gives the game away.
We later get down again and head to Holland Park to have an afternoon snack. π
Now we only need to buy some food. We always take quite a selection of savory and sweet bits and pieces home. But we’re really restricted today.
Back in the hotel, we watch the new episode of Doctor Who on telly. They kicked these space monks’ asses really well! Then, it’s about time to eat dinner! We now have a Five Guys nearby and treat ourselves to one of their great burgers.
