Monday, 24 October 2022: Science Fiction Exhibition

Today we drive to West London to visit the Science Museum in the afternoon. But before that, we go shopping in the nearby Westfield shopping centre. And it’s really huge! And has most of the shops we usually visit in the city. Gabi hits the Nike store… and I don’t hit the Lego shop. It does have a nice selection, and for the really first time I’m also thinking about filling a cup with spiders, cobwebs and other Halloween bricks at the Pick & Mix wall. But without a concrete project to do something with it, I decide against doing so.

We also went to this mall because it has a nice restaurant row with outdoor areas. And while the sun is shining, it’s almost too warm in long sleeves! We are extremely happy to finally eat at Wahaca again. However, we don’t order the complete Mexican menu, because we still have plans for breakfast, but simply four plates to share. That’s enough to fill us up.

Then we go to the museum area, where we have booked tickets for the Science Fiction exhibition in the Science Museum. It starts out extremely promising, with a Mondoshawan from “The Fifth Element” and spacesuits from various space films. But many exhibits are only replicas, including the starship Enterprise, Iron Man or the Alien figure. In addition, there are many areas that are nicely decorated but otherwise offer nothing. In the end, the exhibition remains a colourful hodgepodge of objects from various films. I am disappointed that the only items from Back to the Future are not part of the exhibition, but available to buy in the shop. And the free part of the museum with its space exhibition turns out to be more exciting than the expensive special exhibition itself.

From the museum we drive back to the Westfield shopping centre. And buy wheelcakes from the stall we discovered in the morning. Mmmmmh! Afterwards, we head to the remaining stores in the upper floor, where a second-hand shop has some quite exciting clothes on display. We stock up on Pret’s for dinner, which we take with us and eat at the hotel in Fleet. Hopefully a branch will open soon in Bern and not just the one in Zurich.
