Friday, 19 October 2018: Cadbury Chocolate World
Today we visit the Cadbury chocolate factory in Birmingham! We are still a bit early for our booked entrance time. So we have lunch in the café first: fish and chips with mushy peas and chips with curry sauce – we go full English!
Then our tour starts, and it is so completely different than we had imagined (exactly: no Umpalumpas, which is a pity). We walk through the rainforest of Central America in the Mayan era and learn more about the origins of cocoa beans and chocolate, and how the company’s founder first produced chocolate on a small scale and was able to expand production further and further. And of course, how his son learned the secret of milk chocolate in Switzerland and how Cadbury as a result became the market leader in the UK.
In other parts of the tour we can temper liquid chocolate and write our name in chocolate (or draw a chicken).
Then we board a small car and drive through a rather crazy chocolate world that reminds us quite a bit of Disneyland.
After the chocolate factory we drive to the centre of Birmingham and walk along the canal for a bit. The weather is simply wonderful.
After a stop in the supermarket we get a pizza at Pizza Hut and drive back to the hotel room.
