We’re hitting Guildford today, the nearest larger city. We like Guildford a lot and spend some time here almost every time we’re in the UK – at least to eat something at Jamie’s Italian. We again park the car right besides the restaurant.

We meet Caroline to do some shopping together. Our trip starts at Krispy Kreme with a donut for breakfast. 🙂

Then, we stroll through the picturesque old town on the hill with its smaller and larger stores. There even are small shopping centres which is hard to believe when you see the buildings from the outside. The old town is just gorgeous.

Walking uphill and downhill all the time certainly makes you hungry. We have lunch at Jamie’s Italian where Gabi and I share a 3-course lunch meal:

A bruschetta with ricotta…

A steak with chips…

… and a mango sorbet. Yummy!

We then say goodbye to Caroline who has to pick up Jack from school. We continue our way through the streets and alleys of Guildford.

On the tallest hill, we visit the remains of Guildford castle. There are some walls left and a huge tower, the castle keep I guess, on the very top of the hill. Wow, it’s steep to get up there!

From the top of Guildford, we head to the bottom: We talked to a man before (which in Switzerland wouldn’t occur, you never talk to strangers!) who told us about an Alice in Wonderland sculpture at the river. The author Lewis Carroll used to live in Guildford. We’re eager to see it!

The river area is amazingly beautiful. We stroll along the river and get to parks, pubs and even a lock. As far as I can tell, it’s still in use and transports the famous British house boats up and down the water levels.

Back in Aldershot, we head for the car wash to get rid of the French flies we caught on our way to the UK.

Then, we meet Peter, Caroline and Jack for a relaxed dinner at Pizza Express, which we enjoy a lot. Jack has started to draw (on paper) and amazes us with his skills! 🙂
