25 May 2017: England, finally!

It’s been quite a while since our last holidays. We’re therefore really looking forward to ten days in England. Here we go!

We leave at ten and find ourselves in heavy traffic soon. Of course every Swiss citizen needs to drive to the South over Ascension Day and that even affects our bit where we actually drive North (it’s the motorway that will later head East and then South lead to Lucerne and the Gotthard tunnel accross the Alps). We lose half an hour and cross the border with France in Basel at half past eleven.

We make good progress now, only stopping for fuel and a loo break twice. Time flies by while we listen to Carrie Fisher’s autobiography as an audio book. Despite an involuntary stop we arrive at Calais right on time shortly before 6 pm. We take the Le Shuttle train below the Channel.

Unfortunately, service was disrupted and there’s complete chaos at the Channel terminal. We finally depart with a more than two hour delay and therefore arrive in Aldershot late in the evening. After quickly saying hello to Peter and Caroline, we head to our hotel and go to sleep.
