Sunday 6 May 2018: Sunday roast with friends
We sleep in a bit today before heading to Waitrose in our former neighbourhood. The lady at the till probably thought whether we really only live on crisps and chocolate… but was too polite to ask. The stock we buy should last for half a year hopefully.
We bring the groceries back to the hotel and drive to Hampstead Heath where Clare, Linda and Joke wait in a beer garden. We initially thought about meeting in the park, but there are just too many people around on this sunny Sunday. The cosy beer garden with a lot of shade is a great place to eat an ice cream and drink pimms.
At 4pm, we head over to The Stag, a pub once recommended by Benedict Cumberbatch. We have been here before. It’s especially warm and loud today. We order their Sunday roast: roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and gravy. We not only enjoy the food, but meeting Guy and Sheridan (at the end of the table) again, who have just arrived from the United States.
After our late lunch, we decide to have an Italian gelato ice cream at Covent Garden. So we drive there… only to find out that lots of other people want one too. So we queue. The gelato is worth the wait, and it’s a joy to watch the gelato master prepare and insert the gelato into the cone with some kind of spatula. We eat the ice cream while listening first to an opera singer and then to a string quintette.
Afterwards, we slowly stroll to the hotel most of the others stay at. Here, we treat ourselves to a cocktail (respectiveley: a mocktail). Guy and Sheridan want to stay awake for as long as possible to adapt to the British time zone as quickly as possible.
We arrive back at our hotel at around 10pm. I quickly get some food at Pret as most of the other food places have closed already.
And I put together the Marty McFly and Doc Brown LEGO Brickheadz set that Guy and Sheridan got me. Thank you very much!
Then it’s time for us to go to bed, too.
