14 November 2014 (morning): BBC Good Food Show

This morning, we’re at the BBC Good Food Show which takes places over the whole weekend at Olympia. A lot of stores and chains have stalls here and many newcomers present their sauces, jams, chocolate, meat products, curries and more to become know to a broader audience. In the evening, Jamie Oliver will broadcast his latest Food Tube show live from here. But we already have another appointment then.

We’re here for one reason only: a cooking show by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, the two judges from my favourite baking show ‘The Great British Bake Off’. Several amateur bakers compete in various baking challenges and they decide who goes through to the next round. Mary Berry is a veteran in cooking shows and a regular on TV, in magazines and in writing books. She finds nice words for the bakers – always – while master baker Paul Hollywood criticizes them with no mercy.

We arrive just in time to have her sign her book. Despite having almost no time for everyone that waits in line, she finds kind words here as well. ‘What an unusual spelling’, she says, reading our (nick-) names. ‘Yes, we’re from Switzerland.’ – ‘Oh, I’m cooking with Swiss cheese today!’ 🙂

We have a look around the stalls, eat some cake and head off to the cooking show.

The show is incredibly entertaining. Mary and Paul are just as we know and love them from Bake Off. The camera guy seems to love Mary as well and presents her the best way possible while ignoring Paul.

We continue browsing the stalls and come across one that offers chocolate bars in all kind of shapes, e.g. tools or scissors.

Or this stall with beautifully coloured (and flavoured!) meringue kisses.

We then leave the show and drive across town to the south bank of river Thames.
