Sunday, 5 November 2023: Canary Wharf
I am fascinated by the skyscrapers in Canary Wharf, the business and banking district to the east of central London, named after the Canary Islands, from where merchant ships used to sail here. While LucY charges its battery in the car park, we look around upstairs.
There is now an ice rink on the large green space between the tower blocks, where people skate very carefully along the boards. They’d really need a Clare here to show them how it’s done!
A few houses further on, we walk over a pedestrian bridge whose colours are strongly reminiscent of the upholstery on the London Underground. Above the station is the Crossrail Place Roof Garden. It is located almost on the prime meridian. In the western part there are trees and plants from the western hemisphere, in the eastern part there are plants from the eastern hemisphere. With winding paths and inviting benches everywhere.
After visiting a few shops underground, we head back towards the hotel. We grab a burger and some chicken bites for lunch at Shake Shack before heading to the shopping centre together. It’s no wonder that it’s so busy here on a Sunday. We turn back at Primark and soon decide that it would be better to come back here during the week. At least we manage to grab a donut on our way back to the hotel.
When we get hungry again in the evening, many of the restaurants in the shopping centre have already closed. I actually want to get something at Nando’s, but they’ve run out of chicken! How is that even possible? So after a bit of looking around, we go Mexican: Wahaca has enough of everything left. We soon eat a burrito, tacos, taquitos and delicious crispy cauliflower.
