Thursday, 29 May 2025: Ascension Day journey home
Everything is loaded into the car, the food is bought for the journey and the drinks are in the cool bag. Off we go!
We pass under the Thames in the Blackwall Tunnel and soon leave the outskirts of London behind us. We make good progress. A quick stop at the Maidstone service station to buy some doughnuts, and we arrive at the Eurotunnel terminal. We have to wait twenty minutes before we are allowed to board the train. This is enough time to almost fully charge LucY at the Terminal’s Tesla Supercharger.

Then everything comes to a stop. While six border crossing checkpoints are open when leaving England, there are only three when entering France a few hundred yards further. Perhaps the French, who are predominantly Catholic, have a reduced workforce due to the public holiday, while Ascension Day is a normal working day in reformed England. So what else is there to do but watch the local wildlife and other cars? Amongst them we spot an MG B, like the one my parents had when I was born, in dark green instead of this dark blue one. I travelled in my cot in the back on the parcel shelf.

Suddenly everything is moving fast. The barrier in the waiting area is opening while I quickly take a photo. We are the last ones on the train and have a carriage all to ourselves before the train quietly starts to roll. In the 35 minutes until we arrive in France, I eat my ham and cheese toastie and Gabi starts her satai chicken and rice box from Leon. Fortunately, I was still able to buy one at the terminal, as the previous Leon branches only had their breakfast menu available.

On the way home, we chase the clock on every journey. Because we lose an hour each time due to the time difference. We drive back the same route we took a fortnight ago and charge at the same three Superchargers. It’s never very long, but always long enough for a toilet break and lunch or a snack.

After a pleasant journey, we cross the Swiss border in Basel at 9.15 pm and are home a good hour later.
We have covered a total of 3,169 kilometres / nearly 2,000 miles on our journey.
