Tuesday, 3 May 2022: Back to the UK at last

The car is packed, Calais is programmed. Holidays, here we come!

Today, we try a new route via Biel and Delémont. Which is more direct, but, as it turns out, slower. It takes us almost two hours to leave Switzerland at the northwesternmost edge. We then take small roads through what feels like half of France. Which is very scenic, but not really faster. We’re happy when we finally reach the motorway… and motorway service stations for a toilet break. At least we make good progress afterwards. Eight and a half hours after our departure, we arrive in Calais – just in time for the train we booked.

In Calais, everything works much smoother than before! Immediately after our arrival and check-in, we can get in line and board the train. We’re in pole position – this is how I like it. 35 minutes after train’s departure, we enter the British motorway.

We drive on the left. Which I like. I find it easier to do this in my own car than in a rental with the steering wheel on the other side. Which I like too, though. It will take us about two hours for the final leg of our trip. We enjoy a cheeky Nando’s at a service station. We’ve been looking forward to their chicken for a long time. We then stop in Aldershot for a quick hello to our friends Caroline and Peter before heading off to our hotel in nearby Farnborough. Good night!
