Our holidays are coming to an end. Today we drive home again. But before that I walk over to Pret to get some Christmas sandwiches for the trip – it’s much earlier than I usually go there to pick up breakfast.

On Saturday morning, there is much less traffic in and around London than on weekdays. We make good progress and reach the Eurotunnel terminal in Folkestone as planned 45 minutes before the departure of our train. We even manage to sneak on the earlier train as the last car in! How convenient!

The return trip to France is always a bit ungrateful, with the one hour we lose because of the time difference. But even in France there is little traffic today and we are making good progress too. Probably all the wind turbines in this area provide a tailwind. 😉

After what was probably the most expensive refueling stop in recent years (1.739 Euro per litre petrol 95) we are back on track. And although we are fast, the sun sets long before we get home.

When we reach the overland route between Dijon and the Swiss border, it is already pitch black. It has also cooled down considerably. In the spotlight we can even see snow at the roadside!

After a short stop in Westside shopping centre near Bern (Sushi for dinner: twice as expensive and half as interesting as in London) we arrive at home shortly after 8pm. We were on the road for ten and a half hours today, and covered a total of 2,848 km (1,770 miles) during these holidays.

“This time we didn’t buy as much as usual”, says Gabi, like every time. And like every time, the purchases spread out on the floor prove her wrong.
