Prologue: Off to the Grand Tour of Switzerland!

Ten years after its launch by Switzerland Tourism, it’s high time: we’re going on the Grand Tour of Switzerland! Together with Gaby’s sister, we’re setting off tomorrow on an nine-day journey of discovery through Switzerland.

The Grand Tour is no ordinary route, but a travel recommendation for anyone who wants to experience Switzerland in all its diversity. It covers around 1,600 kilometres through four language regions, passing 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 22 lakes and countless sights – from world-famous cities to hidden gems. The route is signposted throughout and can be planned individually: We set off more or less directly from our front door, follow the official route, visit selected highlights and stay in charming hotels. We were inspired to take the Grand Tour by visits from our friends from the UK and the USA last year. We showed them our favourite places and discovered new ones together with them. This reminded us that we have seen very little of our own country – or at least not for a long time. We now want to make up for that. Whether it will be a worthy alternative to the trip to the USA that we had actually planned for autumn 2025 remains to be seen. When Trump’s intention to stir up hatred as an autocrat, destroy the country, its administration, its democracy and its national parks, and turn the USA into a place where neither tourists nor locals feel comfortable became clear, we cancelled our trip through California, Arizona and Nevada.

So we pack our travel bag, prepare the car and look forward to the experience and many new impressions.
