Saturday 31 October 2015: Bach, Chopin, Shakespeare
We get up rather early today. We meet Claire, Linda and some more fans for breakfast at the banks of River Thames. The sun is shining and a beautiful day lays ahead of us. We stoll along the river from London Eye to Giraffe restaurant. Gabi and I share a Croque Monsieur and a stack of pancakes. Yummy!
After breakfast, we continue to the Barbican where the Sound Unbound classical music festival takes places today. The BBC sypmhony orchestra plays Liszt’s dance of the dead, Mussorgsky and Berlioz. Then, we hear rather strange compositions for piano with film extracts from Psycho, The Shining, 2001 and A Clockwork Orange. The next concerts contains storm, chaos and fireworks, with songs by Vivaldi and Handel, amongst others. Finally, we listen to James Rhodes playing Chopin, Bach and Rachmaninov.
It’s time for Hamlet soon – the final performance. It’s interesting to see how the play has evolved since we’ve seen it on opening night in August for the first time. Some parts have changed a bit. The stage set is still very impressive. Seeing it for the third time, I get more and more parts of the play. That was never an issue for Gabi of course.
It’s great to see so many friends again. We’ve met some of them several times already, others for the very first time. Pei from Indonesia for example, who travelled to and around Europe to watch the play. Time flies by too quickly and everyone – fans and actors – are sad that Hamlet is over now. Most of our friends head back home tomorrow while we stay a little longer. 🙂
