Donnerstag, 17. Mai 2012: Wo essen in Naples?

Thursday, 17 May 2012: The Everglades

Today, we need to get up quite early as we will be driving all the way from Key West up to Naples through the Everglades. This means five hours of driving. But first, we quickly stop at the southernmost point of continental USA for the mandatory photo opportunity. The way back over the Florida Keys is as picturesque as ever and we soon enter the [Weiterlesen]

Wednesday, 16 May 2012: Key West afternoon and dinner

We take some detours on the way back and have a look at some of the rather dreadful souvenir shops. Sponges, sea shells, and pirate tat wherever you look. As we really enjoyed the beautiful cemetery on the last time we were in Key West, we pay the place another quick visit. Back at the hotel, we put away our shopping and Thomas goes for another dip in [Weiterlesen]

Wednesday, 16 May 2012: A new morning in Key West

We start the day with a swim in the lovely pool, toasted bagels and some delicious home-made banana bread. A leisurely walk down Duval Street leads us to the famous Malory Square. We decide to split up and while Dad goes on a trolley tour of Key West, we do a little shopping (I hit the local Hello Kitty store hard) and generally potter about old town [Weiterlesen]

Tuesday, 15 May 2012: First evening in Key West

When going for dinner in Key West, you are spoiled for choice. The nearby Duval Street area overflows with restaurants and entertainment. I am after a place that is a little less touristy and decide to look for a restaurant I had read a lot about previously called ‘Blue Heaven’. Thomas gets out his Key West outfit and we soon find that the restaurant is [Weiterlesen]

Tuesday, 15 May 2012: Arriving in Key West

Finding the hotel is fairly easy and we are soon able to move into our gorgeous rooms. Dad gets the little pool house while we have the spacious ground floor of a bigger building next to the pool. The whole compound is absolutely stunning with a very inviting pool and a beautiful main building with charming porches. As expected, the staff is outstandingly friendly. Dad [Weiterlesen]

Tuesday, 15 May 2012: Driving to Key West

As expected, we wake up pretty early and refreshed at about 7.20 h. No surprise considering it’s already 12.20 h at home. Breakfast is rather excellent and especially the do-it-yourself waffles go down a treat. I am a bore and go for a technicolor bowl of Fruit Loops. American Fruit Loops are so much better than Swiss ones, as over here in the US, they [Weiterlesen]

Monday, 14 Mai 2012: Minivans and good night

At 17.25 h, we finally touch down in Miami (23.25 h Swiss time). We are all quite knackered and desperate to get to the rental car. Thankfully, going through immigration is a breeze: right hand, left hand, smile for the camera, and off we go. I was rather surprised and would have expected much stricter and serious immigration controls. Getting to the rental car is [Weiterlesen]

Monday, 14 May 2012: Flying to Miami

Today is the big day: we’re leaving our place at eight thirty with an incredibly stuffed car. As always, the trip to the airport in Zurich seems to take ages. Check-in would have gone quite smoothly if it wasn’t for the bitchy check-in lady who announced that our luggage can now only weigh 23kg (46 pounds) and not a bit over even though we were [Weiterlesen]

Florida – looking back

It’s exactly 20 years since I first set foot on Florida ground. In 1992, I was visiting the Sunshine State with my parents and sisters for the first time. This was during our second trip to the USA that started in the mid-west (Albuquerque, Holbrook, Chinle, Moab, Cortez, Durango, Taos, Santa Fe) before continuing to Florida for two weeks. Seven years later, in 1999, I [Weiterlesen]
