9 November 2014: Grocery shopping, packing and Jamie

Today, we’re off to some grocery shopping at Sainesbury’s, stocking up on food that should bring us through Winter. And some bits and bites for our loved ones at home. Peppermint chocolate for instance, which is rather difficult to find in Switzerland. BTW, the photo is from when we started only. 😉 We meet Caroline and Jack for a dessert at Starbucks. In the afternoon, [Weiterlesen]

8 November 2014: Christmas Fayre, Pizza and Doctor Who

Today, we’re visiting the Bells Piece Christmas Fayre in Farnham. Caroline has a stall here and we don’t want to miss this. The Christmas Fayre reminds me a lot of local Christmas markets in Switzerland and they offer nearly the same. We look around, buy some things and have a cup of soup. We then stroll around Sainesbury’s – tomorrow, we’ll be back to stock [Weiterlesen]

7 November 2014: Portsmouth

About once per trip over, we visit the sea. This will remain a special experience for Swiss residents who don’t have any. We’ve been to Portsmouth before. Today, we’re here to meet Clare, a friend of Gabi, who lives on the nearby Isle of Wight. The Gunwharf area offers a lot of shops and restaurants. Time flies by while looking around, for example in a [Weiterlesen]

6 November 2014: Shopping

Today, it’s all about smaller stores. Hobbycraft has a huge variety (and much better than in Switzerland) of utensils and accessories on offer for all kinds of hobbies. After more stores, we have lunch at Pizza Hut and indulge in their GBP 6,99 all you can eat buffet of pizza, pasta and salat. After the American Store where we stock up on our American food, [Weiterlesen]

5 November 2014 (afternoon): Bath

We continue to Bath, driving over scenic hills and autumn forests. Very nice! Bath has a lot of old buildings on offer as well. There are the famous Roman baths which the city is famous for, as well as the Royal Mineralwater Hospital. The sights close early, though, too early for us. We opt for a long stroll through the old town instead. Everything is [Weiterlesen]

5 November 2014 (morning): Stonehenge

We’ve wanted to visit Stonehenge for quite some time now. There’s a modern visitor centre with a huge exhibition (open since today only!) where we learn that there had been a wider circle with wooden pilars long before the stones arrived. And possible explanations to who, how and why the stones were put there. We’ve already seen them from a distance when we drove closer. [Weiterlesen]

4 November 2014: Resting day

Being on holiday is exhausting! That’s why we take a break today. Not from the holidays but from doing lots of stuff. We only drive over to Guildford for some relaxed shopping. We have a chicken and mushroom pasty for lunch. That’s a convenient invention and food to take away is one of the greatest British inventions. Workers used to take pasties with them and [Weiterlesen]

3 November 2014: Legoland Windsor

Today, we’re running wild at Legoland Windsor. It’s open until today only before closing down for Winter. Gladly, the Halloween activities are still there. ‘Brick or treat’ for instance, where you can build your own Lego pumpkin for the pumpkin patch. Jack is eager to do it again (they have an annual pass and are here regularly) and I’m up for it as well. And [Weiterlesen]

2 November 2014 (afternoon): Oxford

In the afternoon, we’re driving over to nearby Oxford. This old university town really is… old and mostly consisting of a huge university. In the old town, there’s a pedestrian zone with lots of shops for students – stationary, express binding services for thesis, cafes to hang around and much more. We walk around a bit, right across the huge campus with its old buildings [Weiterlesen]

2 November 2014 (morning): Bicester Village

Today, we’re visiting Bicester Village, a collection of outlet stores of big clothes brands. This means: nice rebates but maybe not the latest or most popular pieces of their collections. It’s really beautiful here and the place is well looked after. It reminds us of Disney Village with the little fake houses and huts. I buy nice shoes for the office for 40 pounds while [Weiterlesen]
