As always upon returning from the UK, we take a box of donuts home and share them with Gabi’s mother and sister.
Today we get up at 7am and are happy: It was a good idea to take a hotel here at Bluewater that is quite close to the Eurotunnel. On our last trip, it was so incredibly difficult to drive out of London. We first head to a Pret to get breakfast and some sandwiches, and make another stop at the Maidstone service station to buy [Weiterlesen]
We do some more shopping in the Bluewater shopping centre on our last day in the UK. Gabi has already put together a wish list with beautiful clothes and other things for several shops in here, which she has researched in advance on the internet, or which were already on our shopping list. After doing the upper floor, we stop for lunch at Wagamama. I [Weiterlesen]
It’s beautiful autumn weather again! We were really looking forward to today, because we see our good friends Peter and Caroline and their son Jack again, who celebrates his 10th birthday tomorrow. First we meet Caroline for a mid-morning snack before we visit Costco together. As before, we’re suprised and astonished by the things – and packages – you can get there, including huge plush [Weiterlesen]
Today, we sleep in a little bit and then drive to Aldershot for the second to last stop of our trip. The weather is simply wonderful and we enjoy the breakfast/lunch break in the sun. In Aldershot, we move into our hotel room, in which we have often stayed overnight. Then we want to go to the supermarket and do some grocery shopping. But the [Weiterlesen]
Today we visit the “Destination Star Trek” Convention in Birmingham. And it starts with a disappointment: Nichelle Nichols, who plays Lieutenant Uhura in the original series, doesn’t feel well and can’t participate today. I was looking forward to the photo with her a lot and put on my uniform from the Star Trek movies II-VII especially for her. Well, so I slip into my “Next [Weiterlesen]
Today we visit the Cadbury chocolate factory in Birmingham! We are still a bit early for our booked entrance time. So we have lunch in the café first: fish and chips with mushy peas and chips with curry sauce – we go full English! Then our tour starts, and it is so completely different than we had imagined (exactly: no Umpalumpas, which is a pity). [Weiterlesen]
We’re having a William Shakespeare day out today! We set off on foot to the old town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. First we visit the house where his parents lived and where he was actually born. In the adjacent museum we learn a lot about his family and the time in which he grew up. And we see excerpts from performances of [Weiterlesen]
Today we start a second attempt to drive to Piccadilly Circus and are more successful – although we had to earn the last metres with patience. First, we head to Fortnum & Mason, probably the oldest department store in London, which was founded over 300 years ago. As always, Gabi has a detailed shopping list and is very focused. In the end, a few sweet [Weiterlesen]
