Friday 20 May 2016: Petersen Automotive Museum and Walk of Fame

(Gabi) Today was an interesting day: Loads of cars and stars (the Walk of Fame kind, no star sighting so far).

There’s this super swanky car museum in Los Angeles called Petersen Automotive Museum. We had to go there because they have one of only three film used DeLoreans from Back to the Future. The museum building is super futuristic and quite cool.

And there are some stunning cars like this special Rolls Royce which was created for the Belgian market.

Or this replica of the first car. They looked a bit different back in 1886.

But this is the reason we came here: The Hero A DeLorean from Back to the Future. This was used for close up shots in all of the Back to the Future movies. This car had been rotting on the Universal backlot for years until a group of fans restored it. And they’ve done a magnificent job because it’s in pristine condition. A true piece of movie history.

There were loads of other movie cars.

And red cars.

IMG_3068

And super cars.

IMG_3095

And a room full of flashy silver cars. And this is the point you realize that I have no clue about cars beyond ‘this is pretty’ and ‘I don’t like the shape.’ Sorry!

Right next to the museum was this fab art installation called Urban Light at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It appears in quite a few movies.

Then we drove 15 minutes to buy donuts in Koreatown. Because that’s how we spend our vacations.

IMG_3139

The bakery also sold AMAZING ham and cheese croissant and Thai Iced Tea, so lunch was sorted!

You can say whatever you want about L.A. but I think it’s pretty. Look at all the palm trees lining the street!

As you have to do some super touristy stuff when visiting a city for the first time, we went to the Hollywood & Highland mall next to the famous Walk of Fame. There I discovered this lovely Victorian Sherlock t-shirt.

IMG_3147

This mall is heaving with tourists and has all the big brands. A bit hellish but a good one stop place if you don’t have a lot of time in L.A.

They even have a patio from which you can see the Hollywood sign. Yes, it’s in this photo. In the distance between the palm tree and the bush. I’ve already said trying to photograph that thing is hopeless!!

Outside the mall you find these. No explanation needed I think. The Walk of Fame is very famous and very long, as we discovered. We did manage to find some favorites like Mr. Ford, however. Some of the stars are in bad shape but we had a fun time walking up and down the sidewalk for a bit.

I’m sure you guys are familiar with the beautiful Chinese Theatre. It hosted the Oscar’s for a while in the 40s, before they were moved to the neighboring Dolby Theatre. It’s even more beautiful on the inside (judging from pictures I’ve seen) and I’d love to catch a movie there someday.

IMG_3248

The theatre’s forecourt is covered in foot and hand prints of big stars. So much cooler than the Walk of Fame in my opinion!

IMG_3262

We had dinner at the California Pizza Kitchen which consisted of these yummy avocado and chicken egg rolls (a bit like very crispy spring rolls, with a thicker shell)

and Chipotle chicken pizza with avocado drizzle and a corn and bean salsa.

Remember those donuts we bought in the morning? Thomie had one with maple glaze and bacon (he wasn’t convinced) and mine was called the Snickers Bar. Because it contains an entire snickers bar and I am a piglet. Didn’t manage all of it, though.
