Tuesday, 23 May 2023: Hestercombe gardens

Today we drive to our friend and her dog Mickey in Taunton. The road takes us past Stonehenge. And out here, tractors also seem to take the motorway.

Together we visit the Hestercombe estate with its beautiful gardens and extensive park. And we are very pleased that Mickey recognises us right away and greets us cheerfully. We take a leisurely walk along the path and pass small ponds, bridges and a waterfall, see a Chinese bridge, a small Roman temple and all kinds of seating, and of course many beautiful flowers and plants. It’s unbelievable that everything was once artificially created – even the waterfall.

All the little paths up and down make us hungry. We find a place in the restaurant and are amazed at the variety of food on offer. Gabi orders a chicken focaccia with asparagus pesto and I an afternoon tea with salty scone. Everything is just wonderful and we enjoy spending a lot of time with our friend.

After lunch, we take a look at the formal part of the garden. And are thrilled! It couldn’t be nicer here with the different levels, the beautiful stone walls, the shady pergola and the various flowers that are allowed to grow more or less freely. Mickey also enjoys it here very much, sniffs everywhere extensively and rolls in the grass.

We stop by our friend’s house for a moment. She has just had her house repainted and we are very excited to see the mint-coloured front door. She hadn’t posted a photo on the internet so that it would be a surprise for us. And everything turned out really coherent.

But then it’s time for us to start our way back. By now it is already half past six. So we say goodbye and drive off towards Bristol. LucY has located the nearest Tesla Supercharger there. It is located in the car park of a shopping centre. Gabi remembers: We were here a few years ago to visit the Aardman shop. The film production company is known for its stop-motion animated films with plasticine figures, especially, of course, Wallace & Gromit and the Shaun the Sheep TV series that came out of it, which we love so much. I can’t believe it’s been 30 years since The Wrong Trousers came out. On our last visit we were rather disappointed with the shop, but now it’s great! And of course it also shows how popular Wallace, Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and the predatory penguin Feathers McGraw are today. We would love to take home a big Feathers statue… but they are unfortunately not for sale and the few copies on the market are prohibitively expensive, as the seller knows.

Oh, we have to go back to the car already. LucY has just reported to us that his battery is almost fully charged. But no wonder! We have almost never charged anywhere as fast as here: at almost 1’200 kilometres per hour. So we drive back to the hotel, still full from the late lunch.
