Thursday, 17 May 2012: The Everglades

Today, we need to get up quite early as we will be driving all the way from Key West up to Naples through the Everglades. This means five hours of driving. But first, we quickly stop at the southernmost point of continental USA for the mandatory photo opportunity. The way back over the Florida Keys is as picturesque as ever and we soon enter the grassy plains of the Everglades. This is a beautiful drive over broad, calm roads with blue skies and loads of green.

At the Shark Valley National Park, we get out for a short walk through the glades and actually manage to spot some stunning birds and alligators. The latter are basking in the warm sun right next to the foot path. Contrary to popular believe, alligators and crocodiles are no big threat to people and as long as you stay about 5 metres away from them, you have nothing to fear.

At around 6 pm, we arrive at the Lemon Tree Inn in Naples, a quaint little motel only metres away from Naples famous 5th Avenue.
