Thursday, 22 May 2025: Cars and a cosy day in Taunton

Today we take it easy. We sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast, and do a bit of charging for tomorrow. How practical: the petrol station where I charged on Tuesday also has a vacuum cleaner right next to the charging bays. There wasn’t enough time to do this before we left for the UK, so I do it now.

We pick up our friend for lunch. Yesterday, we were given free leftover sandwiches from the Bishop’s Café, which we now eat next to Taunton Minster.

In the afternoon, we visit a small car museum in Taunton, which looks like a normal townhouse from the outside –  apart from the two car fronts on the façade. But towards the back, the building goes on for ages on two floors. The County Classics Motor Museum houses the car and motorbike collection of Pat Hawkins, who greets us in person. He bought and sold his first car when he was just 11 years old, and since then has always had a knack for dealing in cars. As a result, his collection has continued to grow. He seems to be particularly fond of Ford. There are several Capris, Escorts and other models such as the Anglia (the Harry Potter car) or a red Mustang Mach-1, as seen in the James Bond film ‘Diamonds are Forever’. And why is the AC Cobra in the Ford room? Yes, of course because it has a Ford engine.

But other British brands are also on display, for example a Jaguar E-Type on a revolving plate. The Ferrari 3.2 Mondial, the two Peugeot 205s, the VW Golf I, several Porsches and a few other brands make things more exotic.

There is one car we miss: the MGB GT, which former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond converted into a racing car in his garage The Smallest Cog in his new programme ‘Richard Hammond’s Workshop’. Richard was present at the opening of the museum at the end of 2023 and had left his MG here on loan. And although the car is still shown on the website, it has gone again. What a pity.

We go back to our friend’s for dinner. We order fish and chips, with a battered sausage instead of a fish fillet for Gabi. Everything is excellent, especially the cuddles with Mickey before and after the meal. Then, unfortunately, it’s time to say goodbye again. Tomorrow we are travelling on to Southampton.
