Sunday, 8 September 2024: A house call on the south coast

We start the day well rested. And while I go to the supermarket for drinks and the bakery for something for breakfast, LucY charges in the car park. This gives us an extra 50 miles of range. We then set off for Portsmouth on the south coast of England.

We meet Clare and Dan in the Gunwharf Quays Outlet Mall, a large open-air shopping centre with marked-down items. I’ve already bought two great leather jackets here. And I’m not disappointed this time either: I find great new winter boots, having already wanted to replace my current ones last season, for just GBP 59. And we also find other things! We buy lots of Cadbury chocolate, Haribo treats… and Lindt things! We’re always annoyed at how much bigger the Lindt range is outside Switzerland. As a Swiss manufacturer, it should rather be the other way round. We watch the ferries and other ships while we eat lunch – chicken from Slim Chicken again. We could eat that every day!

Then we are invited to visit the house: Clare and Dan have recently bought a terraced house. They are originally from the Isle of Wight, which is very close by, and simply feel at home in the neighbourhood. We are quite amazed: the huge neighbourhood is brand new! Everything here has just been built, 3,000 houses! They are already excited to see what else will be built here apart from housing. The house feels incredibly cosy and homely and it’s hard to believe that they only moved in a few weeks ago. The large, open-plan room on the ground floor lets in lots of light and has patio doors leading out into the long garden, which is typical of English houses. And the carpet on the stairs is so soft and comfortable that I can well understand why Clare likes to just sit here. Clare and Dan still have lots of plans to personalise the house and garden. We are already excited!

At half past six we make our way back to Fleet. For dinner we get ‘Menu A’ from the Chinese restaurant that Clare recommended. And we are amazed at what we get for £10! A pancake roll, chicken with mushrooms, beef with green peppers and black bean sauce, five large sweet and sour chicken balls and sauce, plus egg fried rice. That’s more than enough for the two of us. And leaves just enough room for something sweet from the Lindt store.
