15 November 2014: Driving back home

After a great last day, we have to say goodbye to London and the United Kingdom. Thank you for having us! We enjoyed ourselves a lot over here and will be back for sure.

We held back from buying much more things and everything stows away in the car better than we thought. We’ll have a bigger trunk next time nevertheless.

We leave the hotel car park at 8.30, raid a Pret-à-manger to get croissants and sandwiches for the journey (they are very kind and prepare them while we wait as they didn’t have any ready) and Maidstone service station for a box of donuts. We make good progress and arrive at Folkestone in time for our train across the Channel.

Saturday proofs to be a good journey for traveling in France as well. There’s almost no traffic and we make even better progress on the French motorway.

That is until it’s getting dark around 4pm… when it also starts to pour with rain. Which, in France, means more or less driving blindfolded as the lines are almost not visible anymore and there is a lot of aquaplaning going on. We slow down to 55 mp/h and follow a lorry for the last 130 miles to the Swiss border.

We finally cross the border and have a Burger King meal at Swiss service station. Which gives us enough energy to do the remaining 65 miles back home.

We arrive back home at around 9pm. After many nights in the hotel, it’s good to be back in our own flat with our own bed and shower.

We have driven 3,811 kilometres (about 2,400 miles) during our holidays and are extremely proud of our VW New Beetle that made the journey once again without any problems (except of the headlight light bulb which made troubles even before we left in Switzerland).
