Saturday, 20 October 2018: Destination Star Trek
Today we visit the “Destination Star Trek” Convention in Birmingham. And it starts with a disappointment: Nichelle Nichols, who plays Lieutenant Uhura in the original series, doesn’t feel well and can’t participate today. I was looking forward to the photo with her a lot and put on my uniform from the Star Trek movies II-VII especially for her.
Well, so I slip into my “Next Generation” uniform for my photo with “Worf” actor Michael Dorn. Without the Klingon bulges and the beard (but with glasses) he looks so much different. But has a great presence. Then we look around at the stands and in the small exhibition, where many objects from the new Star Trek series “Star Trek Discovery” can be seen.
My highlight of the meeting is the talk and my photo with the three Ferengi from Deep Space Nine. The three are in mask and costume and still look exactly like in the TV series that started 25 years ago. And they don’t answer questions as the actors, but as their characters Quark, Rom, and Nog. This had never been done before.
Then it’s already time for the discovery talk with ten actors from the latest Star Trek series, which will soon start its second season. Unfortunately, we’re sitting all the way in the back.
We then stay and listen to Walter Koenig, who played the navigator Pavel Checkov in the original series.
Afterwards Gabi takes a photo with two Discovery actors who we especially like. We had already loved Wilson Cruz (on the left) as a little boy in the TV series “My So-Called Life” with Clare Danes.
Then I take some photos with other visitors before it’s time for my last photo of the day with Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Janeway of the starship Voyager in Star Trek Voyager.
We then just want to drive back to the hotel and have some dinner in the room. But the Premier Inn hotel denies us any food as they are “quite busy and don’t take any more guests, even for take-away”. Well, this is a first. So I have to head out again to get something to eat.
