Thursday, 22 February 2018: Shopping in Milan
Wow, this breakfast! That hot chocolate was divine! You can really tell the higher value food has in Italy everywhere.
We stroll through the neighbourhood with its many ancient buildings and small alleyways before driving to the city centre of Milan.
Unfortunately, the wheather forecast was right for once: It’s cold and rainy. But we don’t let us stop by a bit of water falling from the skies. We walk around the dome, through the covered shopping arcade and further through the old part of town. We look for the Apple Store but can’t find it – until we realise that the huge construction site IS (or will be) the Apple Store. Instead of the former shop, there will be a public space with steps leading down to a waterfall (concept). It’s hard to tell how the Apple Store will be integrated in all of that.
As it starts to rain more, we visit a large department store where we also have paninis for lunch. One with ham and one with cured ham. Both have flavoured cheese and more on them. They’re yummy.
We intended to visit a convent that hosts the famous painting The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci. Unfortunately, all tickets for today have sold out already. We learn that they only admit a very low amount of visitors as the painting is in a bad state. Too bad.
So we continue to Luce Bar that was designed by director Wes Anderson (e.g. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou or Grand Budapest Hotel) to match his films. My sister Simone recommended the bar which is part of the Fondazione Prada. We like the athmosphere inside a lot. We share a slice of Sacher cake and have a cocktail which comes with small savoury bakes and a variety of nuts and almonds.
The weather hasn’t improved. So we drive to a shopping centre in nearby Arese which my sister Claudia recommended. 😉 It’s Italy’s largest shopping mall. They currently host the replica of a war machine by Leornardo Da Vinci (it’s rather different from the missed painting!), and a large playground for children. We spend a lot of time in the Lego store where I could buy lots of things. I especially like the Lego engines that are available at the moment as well as the Ghostbusters’ headquarter.
The food court is rather small and we end up at KFC, which finally opens its first branch in Switzerland soon.
